Harry Potter star Katie Leung’s miniseries ‘One Child’ to be aired on BBC2's China season

Katie Leung starrer miniseries about China's One Child policy is set to air on BBC 2. The actress, who is best known for her "Harry Potter" role as Cho Chang, a Hogwarts student and the titular character's first love interest, will be seen in leading role in the Chinese drama. According to Radio Times, the three-part series is titled "One Child" and will see the 28-year-old actress portray the role of a young woman Mei. The story revolves around Mei's struggle as she finds herself "caught up in a life-or-death situation" as a result of China's former one child policy.

Penned by BAFTA winning writer Guy Hibbert and helmed by John Alexander, "One Child" also stars Andy Cheung, Enoch Frost, Nicholas Goh, Selina Lo, Sebastian So, Elizabeth Perkins and more. The show will kick off BBC 2's China season commencing in February.

The channel will celebrate China by looking into different aspects of the country through various Chinese programmes. Leung's "One Child" is one of the many such shows to be featured on BBC 2.

Leung's character is a 22-year-old adopted child of a British-American couple. Mei grows up to become a bright student of astrophysics in London. One day, Mei receives a message from her biological mother, who needs help to save her son, Mei's younger brother, who has been convicted for a crime he never committed. As Mei decides to help her mother and her brother Ajun, she travels to her birthplace Guangzhou where she discovers more about China and its culture.

Michael Wood's "The Story of China," Robert Peston's "This World" and Rick Stein's "Taste of Shanghai" are some of the other programmes exploring China will be aired as a part of BBC 2's China season. But before that happens, Kate Humble, The Hairy Bikers and Ant Anstead will bring the Chinese New Year celebrations from Beijing, Hong Kong and the Harbin Ice Festival to channel audience, according to the BBC UK. As the country welcomes the new Lunar Year or the Year of the Fire Monkey, the world can witness the "Biggest Celebration on Earth."
