Chinese actress Zhoa Wei, professionally known as Vicki Zhao, is set to take on the behind-the-camera role of a director for animated feature-film adaptation of "My Fair Princess," the 90s television series that rose her to prominence. Read on for more details.

The big news was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter on Jan. 25. The production and distribution rights to the film have been acquired by Alibaba Pictures, a Chinese film company under the Alibaba Group. The company claims that they have no further details on the "My Fair Princess" animated version.

Zhao plays one of the leading female characters in the show that is set in 18th century Qing Dynasty during the time of Qianlong Emperor's rule. It is said that the series became a household name as soon as it was launched on television. The show is said to be one the most commercially successful Chinese-language series. And it also proved to be a shot to success for the series' leading actors, including Zhao, Ruby Lin and Fan Bingbing, who are now at the top in the Chinese entertainment industry.

Zhao's performance as Xiaoyanzi in the series earned her a Golden Eagle Award. Following which, she appeared in movies like "Shaolin Soccer," "Eternal Moment," "Painted Skin," "Hollywood Adventures" and many more. This is not the first time, Zhao will take on the role of a director. 2013's "So Young" marks the actress' directorial debut.

According to Contact Music, she is the key shareholder for Alibaba Pictures Group. Recently, she reportedly invested $400 million for a 9.18 per cent share in the company.

Written by Taiwanese author Chiung Yao, "My Fair Princess" is a story about an orphan girl Xia Ziwei, who later on becomes a royal princess. Ziwei who is on a search for her father meets Xiaoyanzi at a wedding and they become sisters. As the storyline reaches its conclusion, the Emperor takes Ziwei and Xiaoyanzi as his daughters and they become the princesses.

Apart from Zhao, the show stars Ruby Lin as Ziwei, Alec Su as Yongqi, Zhou Jie as Fu Erkang, Zhang Tielin as Emperor and Fan Bingbing as Jinsuo.
