The official trailer of Sony Pictures' "The Emoji Movie" has been dropped, offering a first look into the digital world of animated emojis.

Released via the movie's official Facebook page, the trailer opens with Meh (played by Steven Wright), who ironically was the one assigned to announce "with pleasure" their first movie. The footage also featured a first look into a couple of popular emojis including the Ice Cream emoji alongside the Poop emoji. Set to hit theaters in the summer of 2017, the plot of Sony's latest animation film will introduce moviegoers to the never before seen secret world inside their smartphones.

Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression - except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer).

Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever.

"The Emoji Movie" is directed by Tony Leondis, who also co-wrote the script with Eric Siegel and Mike White. Michelle Raimo Kouyate is attached as the producer.

In addition to exploring the world of Textopolis, the film has also been reported to integrate with third party apps like Twitter, Spotify, Instagram, Candy Crush Saga, Dropbox, Just Dance, YouTube, Crackle, Facebook, Shazam, Snapchat and Twitch. This means that these popular digital apps will be making cameo appearances in some portions of the film.

"The Emoji Movie" will open in theaters in Aug. 4, 2017.
