Another TV series got the axe. "Salem" is now officially cancelled and will end after its current third season on WGN America.
In a report from Deadline, it was announced that the cable network has no longer opted to renew Salem for a fourth season. The final episode of its current third season will now serve as the show's series finale. "Salem" co-creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon promised fans that there will be closure, as they have plotted the finale to give a full-circle conclusion to the show.
"We are grateful to WGN America and Fox 21 for being terrific partners and giving us free reign to create a satisfying conclusion - one we believe respects our love of storytelling and the show's passionate fans," Braga and Simon said.
"We knew this would be the third and final season and were able to craft an exciting climax to Mary's transformational saga."
"Salem" was a hit when it launched in 2014 on WGN America, targeting a total of 1.5 million viewers on its debut. The show also marked as the cable network's first and highest-rated scripted series. Its current third season is averaging a total of 200k-300k viewers per outing.
The story of "Salem" centers on Mary Sibley, a witch who controls the witch trials during the 17th century. It stars Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Lucy Lawless, Ashley Madekwe, Seth Gabel, and Iddo Goldberg.
WGN America's remaining original dramas include "Underground" and "Outsiders," which are both set to return for a sophomore season in 2017.
"Salem" joins other TV series that were cancelled this year. The list includes: "Castle" (ABC), "The Comedians" (FX), "Containment" (CW), "Conviction" (ABC), "Defiance" (Syfy), "Good Girls Revolt" (Amazon), and "Brain Dead" (CBS) among others.
"Salem" will resume its third season in January. Its series finale is slated to air sometime in early 2017.
