After a year of waiting, fans of "The Leftovers" finally have an official premiere date to look forward to.
On Tuesday, co-creators Damon Lindeof and Tom Perrotta have announced on Facebook that the third and final season of "The Leftovers" will premiere in April 2017. HBO usually releases an all new season of Game of Thrones during that time of the year, but due to weather conditions the cable network has opted to give the slot to "The Leftovers" instead.
Season 3 of "The Leftovers" will take the series into a whole new different setting. After shooting in Texas in Season 2, the final eight episodes of the series are expected to take place in Australia.
Details about the plot are scarce at this point, but Lindelof previously teased (via TV Line) that he plans to give the show a "wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional" conclusion.
On returning characters, it was announced last May that the series will move forward with original cast members including Justin Thereoux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Margaret Qualley, Chris Zylka and Janel Moloney.
They will be joined by Season 2's addition from the Murphy family: Regina King, Jovan Adepo and Jasmin Savoy-Brown. Scott Glenn, who plays Kevin Garvey, is also returning.
In the case of Ann Dowd, who played Patti Levin, she's no longer a series regular for "The Leftovers" Season 3. However, it is still possible that she may appear as a guest star in the final episodes.
"The Leftovers" is based on Tom Perotta's novel of the same name, which tells the story of the people who were left behind after 2% of the world's population suddenly disappears. Although the first season received mixed reviews, the series was able to gain momentum on its second season after Lindelof dropped half of its cast and moved the setting from New England to Texas.
