Frank Herbert's best-selling sci-fi novel, "Dune" is returning to the big screen as "Warcraft" producer Legendary Pictures landed the rights.
Variety reports that that the production company was able acquire the rights from Herbert's hit novel. This means that Legendary Pictures will get to develop projects for both film and TV platforms, with producers Cale Boyter, Thomas Tull, and Mary Parent helming the project.
The well-known sci-fi novel from the imaginative mind of Frank Herbert is set in the distant future where a distant desert planet, Arrakis, is home to the most coveted resource, where powerful families come to seek and claim it. Most of the themes around "Dune" rely on political and religious views and story follows the protagonist Paul Atreides and his quest to reclaim control of the desert planet for his family.
According to IGN, the previous movie was released back in 1984 directed by David Lynch who was the first to adapt the Herbert's novel. The movie starred Kyle MacLachlan, but was considered a box office and critical flop; however, it has since become a cult favorite nonetheless.
Back then when the Sci Fi Channel was still around, two TV miniseries of "Dune" was produced in 2000 and 2003, in which the latter was based off of two of the five books in the series.
Other attempts at remaking the "Dune" film failed over the years, with Paramount Pictures being the most recent to acquire the rights back in 2008. While director Peter Berg was given the task to direct the film, he backed out and was eventually replaced by another director Pierre Morel in 2010. However, the film still never made it.
