Netizens can't help but notice the similarities of Hyoyeon and Ariana Grande for the former's promotions of her debut single "Mystery."
According to Allkpop, a netizen took notice of the similarities between the two artists, pointing out the ponytail hairstyle, the cap and even the outfit. After the observation, many netizens agreed on the claim and even compared Ariana Grande's "Side to Side" MV with Hyoyeon's "Mystery" track.
"Even in the past, there were a lot of suspicions that Girls' Generation's stage outfits were plagiarisms, but the only, unconvincing feedback was that those were "hommages," and then, without even self-reflecting, they again steal the styles of overseas singers, which is a bit annoying and disgraceful," the netizen wrote.
The netizen ended her post accusing the Girls' Generation member of "clearly" copying the image of Ariana Grande in her "Side to Side" MV. Meanwhile, some netizens agreed Hyoyeon copied the American singer's style; however, they added there is nothing wrong in getting inspiration from other artists.
"The hairstyle and the clothes do like kind of similar but the song and the MV [are] different. So what is there to complain about? You've seen male K-Pop idols wearing the same jacket yet no one accused them of plagiarizing. And since when did having the same hairstyle meant plagiarism?" a commenter posted.
Although Hyoyeon's fans defended their idol, others were also pointing out the importance of giving credit when copying something from other artists.
On the other hand, Girls' Generation's YoonA took to her Instagram account to show her support to Hyoyeon for her solo debut, Soompi noted. YoonA uploaded a photo of herself with Hyoyeon, which appeared to be taken before Hyoyeon's performance.
Reports claimed Hyoyeon appeared on "Music Core" to perform her new music as a solo artist. Meanwhile, watch the official music video of "Mystery."
