"Brain Dead" actor Tony Shalhoub joins Amazon drama pilot "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" from the "Gilmore Girls" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. He is headed for Amazon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shalhoub will play an academic and intellectual Abe Weissman in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." He believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible. He is the father of Miriam "Midge" Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan from "House of Cards").

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is set in the 1950s. It centers on Midge's life mapped out for herself. She goes to college, finds a husband, has a 2.5 kids, and throws the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. However, her life takes an unexpected turn. She will quickly have to decide what else she is good at. She becomes a stand-up comic in a grungy dub in the Village.

Shalhoub's role in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" comes days after his CBS political satire "BrainDead" wrapped its first season. He played Sen. Red Wheatus. The series has not yet been renewed for season two. However, creators Robert and Michelle King have previously spoken about having an anthology-type plan for the show, with each season taking place in a new setting.

Shalhoub is best known for his starring role as the obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk in USA Network's long-running series "Monk," Deadline reported. In this series, he won three Emmys and a Golden Globe. His additional TV credits include "Nurse Jackie," "Too Big to Fail," and "Wings."

Shalhoub's previous films included "Big Night," "The Siege," "Galaxy Quest," "Men in Black," "Men in Black II," and "Pain & Gain." He recently wrapped "Tomboy," starring Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver, and Stanley Tucci's "Final Portrait." He is repped by ICM Partners and Mary Goldberg.

Sherman-Palladino wrote the script for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." She will also direct and executive produce it with her husband Dan Palladino. The pilot will be available for viewing so that users can vote on the project.
