Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are back in the saddle once again to save the day (and probably cause inadvertent chaos) in the third upcoming "Shanghai Noon" sequel. The movie was also reported to be helmed by "Napoleon Dynamite" director Jared Hess.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third movie, titled "Shanghai Dawn," was said to have Chan and Wilson in negotiations to reprise their roles as Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon respectively. With details of the East-meets-West buddy comedy movie still being kept, it is still unknown where it will take place; however, one thing's for sure, the movie promises to bring the same action comedic enjoyment that the first two movies delivered. Additionally, actress Lucy Liu is said to once again take the royal garb of Princess Pei Pei from the first movie.s
Writers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough will also return to conceptualize the story for "Shanghai Dawn," as they have done so for 2000's "Shanghai Noon" and 2003's "Shanghai Knights." The script will be written by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum. It was also said that Millar and Gough will executive produce the movie with Spyglass Entertainment being the producers.
Variety also adds that 2000's "Shanghai Noon" was big hit that grossed $99 million worldwide. The sequel "Shanghai Knights" didn't do as well, though, grossing $88 million in the box office, which lead the third film being initially shelved.
The first movie, directed by Tom Dey, follows Chon Wang (Chan), an Imperial guard, who travels to the United States to find and save Princess Pei Pei (Liu). With combination of coincidences and mischiefs, Chon was given no choice but to team up with outlaw Roy O'Bannon (Wilson), eventually becoming friends, to save the princess. The second movie follows the duo to London where they teamed up with Lin, Chon Wang's sister (Fann Wong), to track down the killer of Chon's father.
Director Jared Hess also had other works which hit the box office, especially "Napoleon Dynamite" starring Jon Heder. Other movies he also directed and co-wrote were "Nacho Libre," "Gentlemen Broncos" and "Don Verdean."
Currently, Hess directed the upcoming heist comedy "Mastermind," starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, and Jason Sudeikis, which is scheduled for release on Sept. 30, 2016 by Relativity Media.
