'Gambit' is already in pre-production for years but is still hasn't started shooting. Channing Tatum is already cast for the lead role but with the constant change of production crews and directors, the schedule for shooting is pushed back until next spring.

The project first came into development by Lauren Schuler Donner and Channing Tatum. The two discussed about the potential of the film decided to work together. The production had a hard time to push the project into filming and took too long to find a director.

Rupert Wyatt was hired to direct the movie but quits the production only after a few months due to creative differences. Shortly afterwards, Doug Liman filled in for the role of the director but also dropped the project to work on the Justice League Dark instead. Producer Simon Kinberg said that Gambit still has a lot of potential and that they are taking their time to deliver the audiences a new and exciting film in the X-Men universe.

In a discussion with Slash Film, Kinberg stated that "The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way that 'Deadpool' has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice... Really it's just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character, and I think we're really close right now."

The original date for the production of the film was scheduled in fall 2015 and then it was changed to early 2016. Hollywood Reporter has learned that another reason for the further delays of the shoot is because of the continuous rewrites of the script. For now, the production is scheduled to start the shooting in early 2017.
