"Eat Bulaga's" phenomenal Kalyeserye love team Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, collectively known as AlDub, topped Google Philippines' Year in Search 2015.
According to GMA Network, AlDub nabbed the no. 1 spot in Google's Top Trending Searches list, beating Pope Francis. Netizens were also curious about FIBA Asia 2015, Fifty Shades of Grey movie and the APEC Summit 2015.
Dubbed as 2015's breakout star Mendoza also topped the list of Google's most searched female personality, surpassing Caitlyn Jenner, 4th Impact and Ronda Rousey who came in at 2nd, 4th and 5th ,place respectively.
On the other hand, Richards was the second most searched male personality after Pope Francis. Stephen Curry, Lamar Odom and presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte completed the top 5.
"God Gave Me You," although first released 16 years ago, also made it to Google's Top Trending Songs list. After being used in "Eat Bulaga's" Kalyeserye segment, the song has experienced a resurgence in popularity. Singer Bryan White even had a sold out concert in Manila back in December, attended by thousands of Aldub fans. Mendoza and Richards, however, were unable to attend the concert.
In a press release, via Philippine Star, Google Philippines Communications and Public Affairs head Gail Tan explained that Year in Search 2015 is a very important tool to gauge how the netizens' interests develop over time.
"Locally, the trending search terms of 2015 are a good reflection of the Filipinos' increasing involvement and interest in the things that are happening around them, whether in national events or the breakout of a new pop culture icon," Tan added.
