KCON 2014 brought K-pop megastars Girls' Generation closer to international fans, but their performances have ignited comments on one particular member of the group.
At the Los Angeles-based K-pop convention, Girls' Generation dazzled fans by performing hits like "Mr. Taxi," "Gee," and "Mr.Mr." In their performance videos uploaded on YouTube, some observers commented on Yuri looking slightly different.
"Is it just me or did Yuri gain weight?" commented Tran Pham on YouTube. "Not that it's a bad thing of course."
"Yuri looks prettier because she's curvier now," wrote OptimusBeat on August 14. "But the problem is she looks odd with the rest of Girls' Generation because they are all skinny."
Many Girls' Generation fans criticized such comments focused exclusively on Yuri's alleged weight gain.
"Why are people talking about Yuri's weight?" asked Cindy Gip. "Yes, she got a little bigger on the shoulders. I think it's pretty obvious that she gained weight but do you think she doesn't notice her own body?"
"I'm sure she already knows and is probably doing something about it. It disguises me how people are saying 'Yuri's a pig, she's not hot as before.' Personally, I think she looks healthier and as beautiful as ever so stop body shaming her. Focus on the music, not people's weight."
Such comments on Yuri have is also causing scrutiny on YoonA, who is typically known as the skinniest member of Girls' Generation.
"I'd rather see Yuri with meat on her bones than what YoonA's got going on right now," commented Crystal Acuna. "YoonA is dangerously skinny."
"I am very against calling people out based on their body types, but I think she's really skinny," said xxyeongi based on Girls' Generation's KCON performance. "I can see every single bone under her fingers and it makes me uncomfortable when I see it."
Most recently, Girls' Generation performed in Seoul for "SMTOWN Live World Tour IV."
