Sequels are all the rage this past weekend as the gun toting John Wick returns to kill more people, Christian Grey gets more provocative and LEGO continues its goofy yet lovable adventures through Batman. But the battle of the sequels reveal that LEGO's movie adaptation wins them all.
It's All About the Rating
The movie industry continues with its idea of pushing for a sequel after a block buster release and this week proves it as "John Wick: Chapter 2," The LEGO Batman Movie" and "Fifty Shades Darker" premieres to the delight of every movie viewer around the world. But there can only be one winner and it's the family friendly LEGO adaptation of the caped crusader.
According to ABC News, the Will-Arnett voiced Batman opened the best box office this year followed by "Fifty Shades Darker" and "John Wick: Chapter 2." While it's expected to be a battle between great sequels, it's already expected that LEGO will enjoy this weekend because of its family friendly rating (PG) compared to the other movies with an R-Rating from the MPAA.
All Weekend Winners
But even though the LEGO adaptation wins this weekend, the other sequels still enjoy relative success. The animated LEGO adventure of the caped crusader raked in $55.6 million according to Box Office Mojo while Dakota Johnson's provocative sequel comes in second at $46.79 million. Third placer "John Wick: Chapter 2" gained $30 million over the weekend.
The return of Keanu Reeves as a retired assassin was an impressive feat and a unique story altogether. The first film gained just enough to recoup its budget during its theatrical run but VOD and home viewing pushed the film for a sequel. The first film practically gained a cult following because of its stylistic actions combined with uncut action sequences from the Reeves himself.
