Dallas Mavericks signed Yogi Ferrel in a minimum two-year contract on Saturday following the expired of his 10-day contract. Mavericks took the decision after he scored an impressive 32 points against Portland Trail Blazers.
Yogi Ferrel came from an unknown player to become a remarkable star after scoring 32 points on Friday Feb. 3 against Trail Blazers and helping Mavericks defeated the home team 108-104, CBS Sports reported. He overhauled the Dallas Mavericks offense from back court with his shooting spree along with Seth Curry, shooting 11 of 17 from the field, and adding five assists.
Coach Rick Carlisle put him in the starting line-up and ordered him to be aggressive in his shooting, which he did. He only missed two of his shooting attempts from behind the arc scoring nine three-pointers. His 32 points is tied the undrafted rookie NBA high scoring records with Connie Hawkins in 1969 and Anthony Morrow in 2008.
The Mavericks signed him in a 10-day contract on Jan. 27 from NBA D-League team Long Island Nets in an effort to rejuvenate their back court. He was paired with Curry to create an outside scoring duo and started his first game on Sunday, Jan. 29 against San Antonio Spurs. Ferrel made the starting line-up and made an immediate impact with 9 points and 7 assists to help the Mavericks defeated San Antonio Spurs 105-101.
On the next day, they faced defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers at American Airlines Center, Dallas. For the first time, Mavericks fans saw their new point guard and this time they upset the Cavaliers and won 104-97. Ferrel scored 9 points, made 3 assists and grabbed 9 rebounds.
Dallas Mavericks continued their winning streak and for the first time this season, according to ESPN, they won four consecutive games after Ferrel joined the team. The 23-year old player has arisen from unknown to the stardom and outplayed Tony Parker, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard.
