"The Terminator" franchise is getting resurrected. After losing involvement with the horror/scifi film for years, screenwriter/director James Cameron has been reported to rejoin the property with "Deadpool" director, Tim Miller in talks to helm the project.
According to Deadline, Cameron is set to "godfather" a new iteration of "The Terminator" franchise that could potentially draw a satisfying conclusion to the human race's battle against Skynet. "Deadpool" Tim Miller is also attached, but his involvement is yet to be confirmed. The report adds that CEO David Ellison, who co-financed Terminator Genisys, is seeking reputable scifi authors to "find the movie creatively."
It's unclear at this point as to which direction Cameron will take the franchise from here. As the report said, Cameron is still in talks with Miller to direct a "reboot and conclusion" of Terminator. One can only hope that Miller, who's responsible for the success of "Deadpool," will eventually confirm his involvement. That way, fans who slightly lost their interest in the property would feel a little bit more optimistic.
The original "The Terminator" film was released in 1984 with Cameron serving as director and screenwriter alongside "The Walking Dead" executive producer Gale Ann Hurd and William Washer Jr. The movie was critically praised and grossed over $78.3 million at the box office. It spawned four sequels: "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" in 1984, "Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines" in 2003, "Terminator Salvation" in 2009 and "Terminator: Genysis" in 2015.
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), who played the character of Sarah Connor on Genysis, has confirmed last year (via Comic Soon) that she will no longer reprise the role in any iteration of the movie. No other recent developments about the film have emerged since then. But it's likely that fans will be hearing new updates as soon as Miller makes a comment.
Other upcoming projects of Cameron include the "Avatar" sequels and an untitled animation action adventure. As for Miller, he's currently attached to the upcoming 'Sonic the Hedgehog" movie as producer.
