"Full Metal Alchemist" is one of the most popular anime series in its time and given the popularity of live action treatment of anime's, a live action version of the series is practically in the bag. Although a short teaser was posted online, there are some takeaways about the upcoming film.
Original or Brotherhood?
The original anime series ran for two seasons; "Full Metal Alchemist" and "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood." Although the first season introduced us to the Elric brothers, the second season is known for its faithfulness to its gritty, original manga series according to Inverse.
The movie is most likely to follow the second season of the series which is good news for the manga and anime fans. Although the movie will be a complete story and will not indicate any sequel, starting off on the better part of the manga and anime sets the tone right for its adaptation.
Heavy Use of CGI
Although the teaser lasts for 32 seconds, it already provides glimpse of Edward's power of alchemy. Those familiar with the series will point out another reason why the upcoming film will feature a story from the second season: Edward no longer uses transmutation circle. The film will also change Edward's age a bit since he will be presented as a 20-year old alchemist instead of 15 years young from the series.
According to Anime News Network, CGI will play a big role in the upcoming film. Aside from the use of CGI to bring their powers to life, Alphonse will be on full CGI - no word yet on who will voice the giant metal brother of Edward.
No Race Required
One of the biggest movie news lately was the supposed "whitewashing" of some films especially when the character calls for someone Asian. "Ghost in the Shell" is already taking some flak because of Scarlett Johannsson's casting. Will "Full Metal Alchemist" follow suit?
The film's director Fumihiko Sori already addressed race casting for the upcoming film. Although the film's setting is in Europe that comes close to their names, the cast is Japanese. But Sori indicated that the film will not express any type of race or nationality.
