In "New Girl" Season 5 episode 4, Maki will join Zooey Deschanel as Jessica "Jess" Christopher Day, Jake Johnson as Nicholas "Nick" Miller, Max Greenfield as Schmidt, Lamorne Morris as Winston Bishop and Hannah Simone as Cecilia "Cece" Parekh.

After playing Kumiko in "New Girl" Season 5 episode 4, Maki will star in a comedy TV movie titled "Wrecked" with Jessico Lowe and Ginger Gonzaga. It has also been announced that Maki will play Velma in the 2018 animation film "Scooby-Doo" with Frank Welker as Scooby Doo and Cinta Laura Kiehl as Daphne.

Before playing Kumiko in "New Girl" Season 5 episode 4, Maki played Marie Manna in "NCIS" Season 13 episode 15 titled "Lockdown," which aired on Oct. 20, 2015. Aside from "10 Things I Hate About You," she has also appeared in "2 Broke Girls," "Workaholics," "The Big Bang Theory" and "Bones," in which she played an androgynous character named Dr. Hanu Tanaka.

Meanwhile, "New Girl" Season 5 showrunner Liz Meriwether recently shared some spoilers. She told Entertainment Weekly, "It's time for the characters to grow a little bit. They're not good at being adults."

Meriwhether joked that "New Girl" is like "Scandal" because of their twists, turns and constant surprises. In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Fox series showrunner talked about Hollywood sexism.

According to Meriwhether, there is such a thing as "quiet sexism," in people are "becoming more aware of things that have been happening for quite a while." She said that no one sets out to not hire a female director and explained, "It feels like the awareness that women aren't directing as much as they should, just that being on the radar, will help make a difference in terms of more women getting hired."
