"Sherlock" star Martin Freeman hinted the end for BBC tv series 'Sherlock' but showrunner Steven Moffat insists that Season 4 is not the end.

In an interview, Freeman told Jim Norton and Sam Roberts "Life does sometimes have a way of telling you, 'This is probably it now.'" However, the actor went to clarify that he is not referring to life ending or love ending, Entertainment Weekly reported.

"This last [season] did have a feeling of - I don't know whether it has a finality to it - but it certainly had a feeling of a pause. It definitely had a feeling of that. And I am never ever afraid of things ending. I mean I am not looking forward to life ending or love ending, but things that we make should end," he said.

Earlier, Cumberbatch was quoted saying that the show might end in Season 4 saying, "It might be the end of an era" but clarified that he would love to revisit and return anytime, Screen Rant reported.

In contrast, "Sherlock" showrunner Steven Moffat denied that the show is ending soon. In an interview he said that lead star Benedict Cumberbatch was misquoted and is actually very excited to continue with the series.

However, he did say that they are acknowledging that fact that any show would eventually come to an end and lamented that it is indeed a challenge to get the cast together for filming. Entertainment Weekly reported.

"This is really worth saying because it's getting exhausting for us all. That's not what Benedict said. That's what someone edited his words into the meaning of. It seems to be impossible these days not to be misquoted. He was quite specific about being keen to carry on. [It's] hard to get us all together. We want to keep the quality up. We haven't even seen this [season air] yet. We don't know. We haven't sat down with the intent to anything yet. But we're always aware that it could be over. But the fact is Benedict did not say that," he explains.

Moffat said that they intend to keep the quality of the show at a high level for the fans even if that means the show might undergo some delays. However, the downside is that it may be years before Season 5 will be aired.

"Sherlock" Season 4 opens on January 1, 2017.
