After months of waiting, HBO has finally given fans updates to the long-gestating "True Detective" Season 3. According to reports the Emmy-winning series is back in development, and with "Deadwood" creator David Milch possibly joining the team.

According to Deadline, Milch is in discussions to join the creative team for "True Detective" Season 3. Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of "True Detective," is a huge fan of Milch, and the latter is likely to take on a consulting role in the collaboration.

The discussion is still in its early stages, and HBO has not yet renewed "True Detective" for a third season.

Pizzolatto has settled on a concept for "True Detective" Season 3, but has yet to come out with a final script. According to Entertainment Weekly, Pizzolatto has written "at least the first two episodes" of the next season.

"True Detective" has been in limbo for two years now, following the disappointing turnout of the show's second outing. The first season of the crime drama was a critical darling, and went to score several awards and nominations.

"True Detective" Season 2, however, was a let-down compared to quality that its predecessor delivered. The final episode of the sophomore season was watched by only 2.73 million viewers, a striking 22 percent drop from the ratings earned by the Season 1 finale.

One of the reasons pinpointed for this is the fact that while the first season was a long-gestating project, the second season was created in just a year.

"When we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked--we've failed," former HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo said.

It is believed that the network is allowing Pizzolatto more time to helm his craft and find his muse for "True Detective" Season 3.
