If the rumors are true, Sony might finally reveal details about its PlayStation Neo in its upcoming event in September.

Sony will be holding a PlayStation Meeting event on Sept. 7, at 3 pm Eastern Standard Time, Dual Shockers reported.

Dual Shockers said that Sony did not specify the agenda for the meeting in its invitations. However, Vice reported that, according to anonymous sources, Sony might actually reveal details about the PlayStation Neo during the upcoming press conference.

One source described the event as a technical showcase. Another source said that Sony is also expected to distribute development kits to game developers at the same time that the PlayStation Meeting is ongoing.

Andrew House, chief executive officer of Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed the PlayStation Neo to be a code name for the new console being developed by the company.

Referring to the Neo as an "updated version of the PS4," House also confirmed in an interview prior to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event that Sony is in the process of creating the console. He also confirmed that the Neo will support Ultra High-Definition 4K video.

House also revealed that the PS Neo is not meant to replace the PlayStation 4, but will instead complement the console. The Sony exec further clarified that Sony will continue to manufacture the older console.

As an update, the PS Neo is rumored to feature more powerful hardware than the current PlayStation 4. It will reportedly be equipped with 8GB of DDR5 RAM for memory, backing up eight AMD Jaguar CPU cores clocked at 2.1 GHz each.

It is also expected to be backward compatible with the PlayStation 4. This means that the new console will be able to play all games that are compatible with the older console, but will offer better graphics than its predecessor.

The existence of the PlayStation Neo was first reported by Kotaku in March. The publication had referred to the Neo using the terms PlayStation 4.5 and PlayStation 4K. Kotaku said that the new console will have support for PlayStation VR, Sony's virtual reality head gear. The report also said that the rumored console will be able to support 4K resolution graphics for video games.
