The trailer for "I Am Heath Ledger" has already been released. The upcoming documentary will explore the short-lived life of the late actor and his struggles.

The trailer has been released on what would have been Ledger's 38th birthday had he not died from an accidental drug overdose in 2008. At 28, Ledger had an incredible career appearing in a total of 18 movies and four tv shows. The late actor was also working to become a director after being at the helm of several music videos.

As seen in the trailer, the actor has a lot of footage on and off the set of his films. As his childhood friend Trevor DiCarlo explains, Ledger has always been a director, Screen Rant reported.

In 2009, Ledger became the second actor in history to win a posthumous Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of The Joker in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight."

"I Am Heath Ledger" is the latest installment to the  "I Am" documentaries of director Derik Murray that explores the life of iconic figures and personalities in the media and entertainment industry.  Previous "I Am" documentaries are titled, "I Am Chris Farley" and "I am JFK Jr."

The documentary will feature some never-before-seen footage of the actor including candid interviews with his family, friends, and peers in Hollywood. Director Ang Lee who worked with Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain" and musician Ben Harper will also make an appearance, Vogue reported.

"I am Heath Ledger" will debut at New York's Tribeca Film Festival on April 23 before it airs on Spike TV on May 17.  The documentary comes ahead of the opening at the West Australian Museum in the actor's hometown in Perth this October.

Heath Ledger is survived by his daughter with "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Michelle Williams, Matilda who is now 11. Watch the trailer of "I Am Heath Ledger" below:
