China’s Bruno Wu Announces Partnership With American Producer for Tetris Movie Trilogy

After the release of several movies inspired by games like Pixel, The Angry Birds Movie, and the World of Warcraft (to be released in June), a new game-themed movie is set to shake the world.

The project is none other than the 1984 classic game, Tetris.

Chinese producer Bruno Wu announced the project during the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival in France. The Tetris movie is set to be filmed in China and will feature a Chinese cast. The movie has a budget of US$ 80 million.

Wu revealed that he will be working with Larry Kasanoff of Threshold Global Studios, the producer of two Mortal Combat movies, which are adapted from the fighting game series of the same name.

According to Kasanoff, the movie is not what everyone may be expecting as it would offer extraordinary treats for movie lovers and fanatics of the game.

Another surprise is that the Tetris movie will be a Trilogy. The production of the prequel will start in 2017.

“It’s just a phenomenal idea for this brand. That’s what motivated this whole thing. And you’ve gotta ask yourself why Tetris has been so successful for so many years,” Kasanoff said as quoted by South China Morning Post. “We’ve thought of a really great science fiction movie out of it. I get pitched video game projects all the time, and we’re very picky about that stuff.”

The famous Tetris game was designed and programmed by Russian game developer Alexey Pajitnov and can be played on video games, computers, mobile phones and other devices.
