Netflix is flexing its muscles in the movie industry as they recently posted the teaser trailer for their sci-fi movie "Okja." Although the trailer doesn't say much, technology is blending with biology in more ways than one.
Netflix Movie Releases Continue
With more than a billion dollars in budget for original content, Netflix is not just pushing for critical series as they also aim for releasing movies outside the normal theater releases. Their aim for original content continues as they recently dropped the teaser for "Okja." Based on the trailer, it's going to get more twists and turns as it blends "nature and science."
According to Gizmodo, the movie is about a young Korean kid who befriends an elephant-like creature in the forest. Apparently, the creature is hunted by a corporation led by an eccentric leader portrayed by Tilda Swinton ("Dr. Strange"). At first the elephant like creature doesn't really have some unique features, but a closer look reveals that the elephant might be something more because of its eyes.
The Mind Behind 'Okja'
The upcoming sci-fi movie on Netflix has become one of the highly anticipated films of its genre because "Okja" is co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho. While he's not necessarily a big name stateside, he is a very popular director in the genre. His last Hollywood film was "Snowpiercer" and he is also the acclaimed director to another Korean monster movie "The Host" according to The Verge.
Aside from Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal ("Donnie Darko") is also in the film although the latest trailer did not feature the actor. Netflix has not announced the release date of the film but it's expected to drop for Netflix subscribers this June with the expected limited theatrical run.
