The latest installment of the widely popular horror first-person-shooter franchise, "Resident Evil VII," did not fare well in its official release in Japan. Although this looks disappointing for the game's developer and publisher, some video game retailers claim that the game will eventually sell if Sony decides to ship more PlayStation VR units.

The PlayStation 4 version of "Resident Evil VII" only sold 58.64 percent of the initial shipment. These figures were taken during the games first week in the market. Statistics show that a total of 187,306 copies of the game were sold. This shows a massive decline of sales compared to the PlayStation 3 title "Resident Evil VI" which managed to sell 635,000 copies in its first week, according to Dual Shockers.

Some tech analysts said that this lag in sales output can be attributed to the lack of PlayStation VR units that are available. Although "Resident Evil VII" does play well on the conventional PlayStation 4 console, the game has been widely held to be truly immersive when played using a PlayStation VR headset.

Sony has been quite slow in shipping PlayStation VR units, with stocks being sold out almost immediately after it hits the shelves. This has caused long queues on several retail shops in Japan. Something that spells well for Sony as demands for the coveted virtual reality headset have been sky high recently.

Some analysts claim that should Sony come to address the current supply problem of the PlayStation VR, it will come as no surprise if sales of "Resident Evil VII" will also rise.

On the other hand, the Xbox One version of "Resident Evil" have fared well on the charts. According to iDigital Times, Japanese sales research firm Media Create reported that the game debuted on the 49th spot, with no specific sales numbers released to the public yet.
