"Gotham" finally returned this week with an all new episode that features the return of Cameron Monaghan as the fan-favorite character, Jerome Valeska. As teased by the show's producers last year, viewers will find Jerome finally embracing his alterego The Joker in the remaining episodes of Season 3.
At the recent Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour, showrunner John Stephens revealed to reporters (via TV Guide) how they have plotted Jerome's return into the ongoing storyline of "Gotham" season 3. Stephen said that David Mazouz' character, Bruce, will serve as a connecting tissue to Jerome's return in the streets of Gotham.
"[Bruce] really gets pulled into the Jerome story," Stephens said.
"We really see a big step that he takes. Another brick in that wall [of the Batman philosophy] gets built in episode 14, and it gets built via Jerome. Jerome being the stand-in for the person we know he probably is out there. it's, for us, really significant that that guy ends up informing this part of Batman's mythology."
As for fans who are wondering how the character has changed since he was killed last season, the showrunner said that he's still the same person. However, he's just not as nice as before.
"Someone who has basically gone through death and come back to life has a very different point of view. He also has a grander point of view. It's altered how he is. It's odd to say he's more psychotic than he was before," Stephens explained.
Next Monday, Jerome's resurrection arc will continue. Per the episode's official synopsis, viewers will find Dwight (David Dastmalchian) trying to revive Jerome while he's on the run from Gordon and Bullock. In turn, this move will activate his acolytes around Gotham City.
"Gotham" also stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Morena Baccarin, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards and Camren Bicondova.
