In a recent report, "Prey" developer Arkane Austin is working on ways to avoid the launch problems experienced by their sister company's release, "Dishonored 2". According to creative director Raphael Colantonio, the PC version was heavily tested before the launch of "Dishonored 2" but they didn't account for the numerous configurations gamers use. Since then, the company has decided that they will dedicate more time to checking performance issues with computers. Despite, the rough launch of "Dishonored 2", the developers were able to fix the problems with subsequent patches to the game.

One of the reasons that "Dishonored 2" had a lot of problems were because it was a new engine. For "Prey", Arkane opted to use the CryEngine so it will not have the same configuration. "Prey" is described as a hybrid game, mixing action, narrative, and role playing game elements. According to an interview with lead designers, "Prey" will feature consequences to player's actions similar to that of "Dishonored". The game will be set in a new world, with many tidbits about lore scattered throughout Talos I.

Players will also be able to upgrade their abilities and gears through chipsets. Chipsets can increase inventory size, repair items, and even improve their alien powers. Another similarity between "Prey" and "Dishonored" is that players will be given a choice on how to approach the game. It will be possible to play through the game without using alien powers at all though killing aliens will be encouraged. However, the actions players make will have consequences. "Prey" will feature a newer interface and developers hope to make it unobtrusive for players.

"Prey" is a reboot of the series as "Prey 2" was originally being developed by Human Head Studios but was cancelled in 2014. Since then, development of the game has been given to Arkane Studios.
