"Star Wars: Rogue One" actor Forest Whitaker has been confirmed to return for the franchise in the future.
Whitaker plays Saw Gerrera, a passionate freedom fighter in "The Clone Wars" who was first seen in the said cartoon series. In an interview, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that there are plans in place for Whitaker's return in the "Star Wars" universe.
"To be honest, we originally thought we were going to develop Saw into something much larger, but we couldn't accommodate it. So he is not in the movie as much as we would like to have him in the movie, which creates the opportunity to explore his character even further in our future development," she said, Empire reported.
Kennedy said that Whitaker will reprise his role in an episode of "Star Wars Rebels next year" where he will voice the character. Other reports also claim that Whitaker's character could be the subject of the next "Star Wars" spin-off that centers on Han Solo, Screen Rant reported. The latter remains to be speculation for now but given the interest of Disney to fill in the gaps in his storyline, it will not be surprising to say the least.
As for Whitaker, the actor said that he seems to be open for a chance to reprise the role.
"I'm curious about what else they're about to do. Because they seem to really like the character, which is great!" he said.
For the uninitiated, Saw Gerrera is a resistance fighter and a leadng member of the Onderon rebels that fought against the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Onderon during Clone Wars. He later became a key member in the fight against the Galactic Empire and the formation of the Alliance to restore the Republic.
