"Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss has revealed the ideal manner in which the series might come to end.
In an interview Gatiss said that he would want the series to go full circle. Fittingly, his plan will pay homage to the titular characters of the series, TV Line reported.
"Right at the beginning, we said, wouldn't it be fun - because we start with the first meeting, which is very rarely dramatized - if we actually ended up with them at the same age as Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce? That would be a really interesting place to be with Benedict and Martin, having started so early in their careers as young men," he said.
There is no telling what the future holds for the series amid reports that Season 4 will be its last tango. "Sherlock" stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman hinted that the new season could be its penultimate but co-creator Steven Moffat has repeatedly denied that the show is ending soon, Screen Rant reported.
Shortly after Freeman said that Season 4 feels like having a "pause" to it, Moffat said that Cumberbatch was merely misquoted about the series ending soon. However, he conceded that it is a challenge to get the cast together for filming because of conflicting schedules.
Later, Cumberbatch clarified that he is willing to return to the series if it's right. However, given the irregular airing of the series since 2010, Season 5 may not come anytime soon.
As far as Gatiss is concerned, "...we certainly don't want to wave goodbye to something like [Sherlock] lightly," though he was quick to point out that "there is a great precedent for leaving well alone. [The classic UK sitcom] Fawlty Towers is twelve episodes, with four years apart. And it's perfect," he said.
