A 90's classic is making its way back into the gaming world once more as Ubisoft filed applications for "Battle Isle" in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

According to Dualshockers, the interesting thing to note is that the studio has reclaimed the trademark itself, but nothing else has been said of the game's actual revival or something else entirely.

"Battle Isle" is a series of turn-based tactics computer games developed in the 1990s by Blue Byte Software, where it takes place in the battles of the fictional planet, Chromos. The game achieved moderate success in Europe. First game launched in 1991 and was followed by eight other sequels and add-ons, achieving a cult status for many strategy PC gamers. Some of the titles have actually sold around 600,000 copies at the time.

The game was somewhat short-lived as Blue Byte's founder Lothar Schmitt left with no traces of him and co-founder Thomas Hertzler establishing a brand new game studio called "Stratotainment, LLC." Hertzler eventually filed for trademark ownership of "Battle Isle."

Hertzler, along with his studio Stratotainment, decided to come up with the latest title and reboot "Battle Isle: Threshold Run" for the iOS. The studio set up a Kickstarter campaign for the potential game with for a goal of $75,000. The game was aiming for a 2013 release but shuttered on September 2014 after numerous delays. At that time the project was able to raise only $3,797 (5% of the total goal).

According to Hertzler, the studio decided to close the campaign in order to self-fund "Battle Isle: Threshold Run." It would seem that the former Blue Byte co-founder would look at another direction for "Battle Isle" other than "Threshold Run," saying that he would "announce the direction of the Battle Isle franchise in the future." However, the project has since been placed on hiatus on September 2014, as mentioned earlier.

Hertzler and Statotainment have since then moved on from the "Battle Isle" franchise to work on a free-to-play PC tank game called "Gamma Protocol," according to their website. Nothing much has been said about the studio or their latest game, except for their site that shows the latest news being at Nov. 16, 2015 about their solidarity on the Paris attacks at the time.

Despite any hopes of "Battle Isle" being revived lost since its abandonment on June 2016, the news of Ubisoft acquiring Blue Byte might open up the possibilities of bringing back the franchise.

Here's what the original 1991 "Battle Isle" looks like:
