‘Princess Mononoke’ returns to theaters for 20th Anniversary release

Typical of many Studio Ghibli fims, especially a Hayao Miyazaki creations, "Princess Mononoke" enjoys cult status among fans who are very passionate about it even after almost 20 years after the film's original release in 1997.

Considered to be one of the finest films from Studio Ghibli, "Princess Mononoke" is not only a critic darling but also a commercial success. It was the highest grossing Japanese film in 1997 and was the highest grossing film of all time in Japan until the release of Titanic.

The popularity of the internet has paved way for the film to expand its fanbase around the globe. Aside from this, the film was also dubbed in English and was distributed by Miramax, winning many dedicated fans in all corners of the globe.

With 2017 marking the 20th anniversary of its original release, GKIDS, the American distributor of Studio Ghibli, is treating fans with the special release of the film in select theaters in the US. This will be a blowout for old and new loyal fans of the legendary epic film.

The anniversary of the film will also coincide the birthday of the legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. Because of this, "Princess Mononoke" will have a special two-night only cinematic release in several American movie theaters, Screen Rant reported.

The screening will take place on January 5, 2017, the film played in Japanese with English sub-title. Another scheduled screening is on January 9, 2016 which will be in full English dubbing.

Fans who will watch the special release will receive a special bonus. Aside from the full feature film, they can also watch the rare 1995 music video directed by Hayao Miyazaki for Japanese band Chage & Aska's song 'On Your Mark'.

Fathom Events is co-presenter of the anniversay release of "Princess Mononoke" and tickets are sold in their website. Expressing joy with the special release, Fathom Events CEO John Rubey said:

"We are pleased to be partnering again with GKIDS to bring another of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's animated classics to cinemas across the country. Following in the footsteps of 'Spirited Away: 15th Anniversary,' 'Princess Mononoke' is set to be another fan-favorite Fathom event."
