NBC's "This Is Us" continues to take fans by surprise with every new twist per episode. So far, the show has been a mix of good, light-hearted comedy and major drama. On top of the tear-fest order is the latest episode, titled "The Game," which revealed the heartbreaking fate of a main character. Warning: spoilers below.

In episode two of "This Is Us," viewers were introduced to Rebecca and Jack's martial issues. Jack had been drinking most nights while Rebecca struggles to take care of the three kids at home. In the present day setting, the show delivers a big shocker: Rebecca is remarried to Jack's best bud, Miguel.

The reason for Rebecca's remarriage wasn't discussed in the episodes that follow. Naturally, viewers presumed that Rebecca and Jack's problems were far from reconcilable and that she found new love in Miguel. But it turns out the reason why Rebecca and Jack are no longer together in the present is far more heartbreaking: Jack's dead.

The big reveal came out unexpectedly, Kate and Toby were watching a football game, during which Toby pauses it. Irate, Kate walks out. Toby apologizes, so Kate explains that it was a tradition she shared with her father, TVLine reports. When Toby asks if he could meet Kate's dad, she tells him that he's already dead and that his ashes have been sitting inside an urn in Kate and Kevin's Los Angeles' home.

The big question in everyone's mind now is what happened to Jack? How did he die? Milo Ventimiglia, who plays the Pearson patriarch, says "It's a pretty big answer."

"Now comes all the questions, now comes all the speculation. For all of us on this side of things, now comes the moment where we get to open the story up and really let people into the lives of Jack and Rebecca and the kids," Ventimiglia tells ET Online.

When asked to reveal when viewers might find out the story behind Jack's death, Ventimiglia said, "When [Dan Fogelman] decides that it's right for the audience to know at what point Jack stopped being a teacher for his children or being a husband to his wife." "This Is Us" airs every Tuesday night on NBC.
