While the possibility of "The Last of Us 2" has been headlining the news for over a year, fans of the mega hit game will be disappointed to learn that its official release date is playing anytime from 2018 to 2021. Cynics even have claimed that the sequel is most likely a hoax as no official statement from Naughty Dog has been released yet.

Although Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog's Creative Director, slipped and indirectly confirmed a rumor that they are working on the sequel of TLOU, it is yet to be confirmed by the video game California-based company that there are indeed prototypes or even a concept at work for "The Last of Us 2," Digital Spy reported.

Druckmann, the game's writer, did say he and Bruce Straley, the game's director, were brainstorming new characters for a TLOU sequel and went as close to narrowing down their ideas when they got called to work on "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End", which was released earlier this year. Fans are hoping that since Uncharted 4 is finally out maybe the TLOU creators can now focus on the most-awaited sequel of the $3.4 million success that is The Last of Us and release it already. But this could be very far from reality.

Even the voice actors of this critically acclaimed video game are at spar if there truly is a sequel. Its existence was first denied by Troy Baker, the actor who voiced Joel. Nolan North, the actor who voiced David, on the other hand, definitely thinks it's on the card. The release date could be in June 2018, exactly five years from when the original game came out, PlayStation Universe reported. Or it could be in 2021, which is eight years later. This in itself makes the actuality of this video game dubious.

Joel and Ellie are rumoured to reprise their roles and it will follow a similar parallel story. While this has also been unconfirmed by Naughty Dog, one thing is sure though, if the creative team behind The Last of Us is truly working on a sequel, then it is bound to be a huge success. Druckmann and Baker are known to create life changing stories that fans will go crazy for and it's evidenced by the massive global sales their games have garnered.
