Xiaomi Mi 5s boasts Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset; Launch date expected next week

The recent launch of the Apple iPhone 7 have made many smartphone manufacturer to raise the bar higher when it comes to their own devices. Recently, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is tipped to host a major event on Sept. 27. On the event, Xiaomi is expected to launch the Xiaomi Mi 5s smartphone with the very powerful Snapdragon 821 chipset.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s is an upgraded version of the Mi 5 flagship device. Specifications and renders of the device have been leaked several times already giving the tech community an unprecedented sneak preview to Xiaomi's upcoming smartphone.

 While most of the specs of the device are similar to that of its predecessor, Xiaomi is making one major upgrade, and this is on the phone's chipset. The original Mi 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, its upgraded version, the Mi 5s, is powered by the Snapdragon 821 chipset.

The Snapdragon 821 chipset has a quad-core processor clocked at 2.4GHz, and an Adreno 530 graphics processing unit. Complementing the chipset is 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space. Previous leaks have also confirmed that the Mi 5s will come in several variants depending on its memory/storage combo. According to GSM Arena, the Mi 5s will have a 5.15-inch display.

Despite the imminent release of the Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade, the Mi 5s is expected to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Xiaomi's own MIUI 8 interface on top. The phone is also tipped to support dual-SIM configuration, according to NDTV.

Earlier leaks have also hinted that the Xiaomi Mi 5s will sport a dual-camera setup, a configuration that has become quite popular recently. Leaks pointed to a 16-megapixel rear facing main camera, and a 4-megapixel front facing camera. The phone is also expected to sport a fingerprint scanner, and a tactile Home button that is similar to that of the iPhone 7.

Although much of these rumors are quite interesting, some tech analysts are saying that since Xiaomi have yet to confirm it, everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. Xiaomi is slated to hold its upcoming event on Sept. 27 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.
