Hideo Kojima, the genius behind the highly successful "Metal Gear" franchise, recently teased the gaming community about its latest project, "Death Stranding." The game, which has been shrouded in mystery since its surprise appearance in this year's E3 conference, is expected to hit the shelves sometime in 2018 and may feature a female main character.

Kojima's statement has sparked quite a lot of interest in the gaming community, especially with the man's reputation when it comes to making ground making games. Despite the growing interest on the game, Kojima and his team has kept a tight lid around it and has since kept their silence regarding the game's current status.

Regarding the game's release date, Kojima dropped a hint while speaking during a Q&A session at the Tokyo Game Show. In a statement acquired by VG24/7, Kojima said, "It will be out before the Olympics. To go a little further, there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set."

Analyzing his statement, Tokyo will be hosting the Olympics in 2020 and the movie "Akira" is set in 2019. This led many fans and analysts to conclude that Kojima might drop his latest creation sometime in 2018.

According to GameSpot, Kojima also confirmed that "Death Stranding" will feature a female protagonist. Kojima added that her story line is still being ironed out.

Kojima said that they will be using a well-known third party game engine for "Death Stranding," adding that creating their own engine from scratch might take some time and will push the game's release date even further. Kojima had been visiting several gaming companies since last year.

"Death Stranding" is slated to be an open world game. Kojima's own game development studio, Kojima Productions, is heading the development of the game with Sony Interactive Entertainment joining in as the publisher. The game is currently slated as an exclusive PlayStation 4 title.
